Geopolitics in Command:
How Energy Dominates World Affairs
May 29, 2008
On May
23, 2008, Norm Hansen, President, attended
The Chicago Council Corporate Event and
listened to
Michael Klare,
preeminent expert
on resource geopolitics, discuss how countries are struggling over
energy, which has become the central dynamic of world affairs. The
competition for energy is fundamentally changing policy, business, and
society worldwide. Some countries are losing power as their resources
dwindle, while others with still-untapped energy and mineral reserves have
suddenly acquired global significance.
His
presentation was based upon his recent book, Raising Powers Shrinking
Planet The New Geopolitics of Energy. The demand for energy is created a
new political landscape. Nations with large reserves of oil, natural gas,
and other stores of energy are having tremendous influence over world
economies and politics. The world is running out of energy as the demand
increasing in China, India, and other underdeveloped countries. The demand
for energy is going to effect future generations and the potential
opportunities for globalization.
Michael Klare has
written on U.S. Defense Policy, energy issues, the arms trade, and world
security and published the following books; Blood and Oil: The Dangers
and Consequences of Americas Growing Dependency on Imported Petroleum
and Resource Wars: The New Landscape of Global Conflict.
